There's been a change in the host's seat. Rob Bagchi is taking over from Steve Busfield for a spell.

Beach volleyball might not be Team GB's strongest event...

Steve Grotowski and John Garcia-Thompson's Olympic bid began with a defeat as the British pair went down in straight sets against Canada at Horse Guards Parade: 21-19 21-13, writes Rob Bagchi. It was the first appearance by a British men's team in this sport at Olympic level.

Empty seats: Official response
Owen Gibson writes: "London 2012 organisers have promised a "full review" after thousands of empty seats were visible across various venues on the first day of competition. Despite most events having long since sold out, there were rows of empty seats visible at the swimming heats, the gymnastics, the volleyball and the dressage in Greenwich Park. The London 2012 organising committee said it appeared that most of the empty seats were not sold to members of the public but were in "accredited" areas meant for members of the "Olympic family"...More here.

Where would a Guardian minute-by-minute be without the input of the esteemed Gary Naylor. He emails:

"I'm still reeling from the tactical and televisual shambles that was the road race. I'm not sure what was worse: Team GB treating the race like a stage of the Tour de France and not a madcap Belgian Classic like the Tour of Flanders: or television coverage that seemed to be the result of handing it over to promising teenagers, which, admittedly, worked last night with the torch. My question is - how long does the feelgood factor from Danny Boyle's Dazzling Britain last? Until more medals are squandered? Until rightwing MPs and journalists stop frothing at the mouth in such delicious anger? Until me and the kids spend two hours trying to get into the Men's Table Tennis (3rd Qualifying Round) on Monday?"

Medal table: China top

I see some discussion below the line about he whereabouts of the medals table, well here it is. When I'm not here to help you out, you can find it at the top of the Olympics page. And at the moment China are top with two golds and a bronze. Sixteen nations have medals, but so far no GB or USA or Australia. Early days though...

GOAL!

GB's Women have taken a 1-0 lead versus Cameroon through a goal from Casey Stoney. As previously mentioned, if GB win this game then Tuesday's GB vs Brazil match at Wembley will simply be to decide who tops the group. Although, of course, that could be pretty important given the relative strength of some other contenders.

Olympic torch: Don't tell your parents...

So secret was the identity of the youngsters who lit the Olympic flame that they didn't even tell their parents. Indeed, one teenager, Jordan Duckitt reveals that his parents had even gone away on holiday without him. Read more of this impressive teenage self control here.

USA vs Colombia

The reigning Olympic champion women's football team, USA, are in action against Colombia. You can follow that live here. Meanwhile, I have tickets to take my kids to see GB vs Brazil at Wembley on Tuesday (as does Rob Bagchi). If GB win today, that group game will be completely meaningless. That is annoying. Still, it's not the winning, it's the taking part.

400m freestyle champion reinstated

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan, the reigning Olympic champion, has now been reinstated in the 400m freestyle final after winning an appeal against disqualification. Germany's Paul Biedermann, the world record holder for the event, missed out on the final after finishing 12th overall in 3:48.50.

17:10 BST

Good afternoon, morning, evening, middle of the night, wherever you may happen to be. For the rest of Day One of the actual London 2012 Games (or is it Day Four if you include all that stuff before the Opening Ceremony?) it will be myself and Rob Bagchi guiding you through the events...
17:02 BST

And that's me done for today. I'm handing over the baton to Steve Busfield, who'll guide you through an exciting opening evening.

The five o'clock news on the opening day...

Mark Cavendish suffered bitter disappointment in the road race, missing out on a medal as Alexander Vinokouroff of Kazakhstan took gold
The first gold medal of the Games was won by China's Yi Siling in the women's 10m air rifle.
South Korean shooter Jin Jong Oh's claimed victory in the men's 10m air pistol
Park Tae-hwan, pre-race favourite for the men's 400m freestyle, was disqualified for false starting.
Michael Phelps qualified for his first final of the Games, in the 400m individual medley, by just 0.07 seconds and will start tonight's final in lane eight.
An Albanian weightlifter was expelled from the Olympics after testing positive for stanozolol.
Two rowing records were broken, New Zealand's Eric Murray and Hamish Bond shattering the world record in the men's pair, and Britain's Helen Glover and Heather Stanning beating the Olympic record in the women's.

16:54 BST

Sarah Menezes of Brazil has won the women's 48kg judo. Ranked second in the competition, Menezes beat defending Olympic champion Alina Dumitru of Romania in a defensive final. She spent most of the time struggling - and failing - to sweep Dumitru to the floor with her feet, but eventually won the day with a throw at the death.

Meanwhile, back to matters of guns and buckshot. "The only time we ever get to see a shooting competition on the box is at the Olympics, but back in the 70s pistol shooting was a regular feature of Superstars," recalls a wistful Ian Burch. "Stan Bowles memorably fired a shot into the table when he picked up his pistol in his heat of the show, he also capsized his kayak did Stan. Thankfully footballers have become much more proficient with guns since then as England's left-back recently proved."

Any old excuse to post one of the great BBC themes (and link to this old Joy of Six on sporting tunes, which should probably, in all honesty, have seen me sectioned).

Olympic 2012 track turning to Race Track ?

A scheme to turn the Olympic Stadium into part of a Formula 1 track after the London 2012 Games is one of four now under official consideration.

Football clubs West Ham and Leyton Orient are bidding to be tenants, as is the UCFB College of Football Business.
An original deal for West Ham to lease the £486m stadium was scrapped last year amid legal wrangling.

The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) said bids will be assessed before any negotiations begin.

Plans for a grand prix circuit were tabled by Intelligent Transport Services, in conjunction with F1.

The proposal  would reportedly allow another British round of the world championship in and around the stadium in East London.

UCFB,  which offers degrees in football business, is based at Burnley FC's Turf Moor ground and is an affiliate of Bucks New University.

It is understood Orient's proposal is based on a ground share with West Ham, although the Premier League club has previously insisted it is not considering that arrangement.

F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone said last month that he had been consulted by the Intelligent Transport Services company about plans to use the stadium for a race.

Ecclestone told the Daily Telegraph: "This is a firm that happened to be bidding for use of the stadium, not to own it. They came up with a scheme whereby Formula 1 would race around the stadium, inside it, outside it. They wanted to make sure I would be interested."

He has separately said that plans for a race on a 3.15 mile (5.1 km) London circuit taking in sights including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square were "no joke".

Orient chairman Barry Hearn refused to comment on a possible ground share, but told BBC Sport he hoped the League One club's bid could succeed.

"There is no point dwelling on the design of the stadium and the faults of the stadium," he said.

"We have to get on with it, we have to make a fist of it and we have to make sure the Government and the people of this country get maximum value for the investment that has gone into the Olympic Stadium.

"Our idea does that and I think it forms part of a legacy that people in this country can be proud of. Bearing in mind this is the only time in our lifetime that we are ever going to hold the Olympic Games, we need to get something out of it.

"A mixture of usages and a mixture of opportunity within the Olympic Stadium will give us the feeling that we have spent our money wisely and that is really what we are trying to achieve. All sides have to exercise common sense and move forward. I think we have created a very interesting scheme that can do just that."

Essex County Cricket Club has dropped plans for tenancy at the stadium after its partner, the University of London, pulled out of the process.

It has already been announced the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium will be reduced after the Games to a 60,000 venue, which retains a running track, and will host the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

The LLDC says it is possible more than one bidder could be successful, with a decision expected in the autumn.

Meanwhile, preferred bidder status has been granted to iCITY for the Olympic press and broadcast centres.

It wants to them into a design, technology and research base that might create more than 4,000 jobs. The scheme includes a conference centre, pedestrian square, cafes, restaurants and bars.

Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix 2011 live streaming online racing broadcast video feed Nat tv 360 gamecast April 8-10 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix 2011 live streaming online racing broadcast video feed Nat tv 360 gamecast April 8-10 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Sepang Malaysia(Hollywood Today)4/8/11—It’s hot, it’s sticky and it’s the second round of the 2011 Formula One World Championship in Sepang , Malaysia just outside Kuala Lumpur .  Here’s the latest from the media, teams and drivers in KL.
So the podium in Melbourne was host to two world champions (Vettel and Hamilton) and two “podium virgins”.  I was fortunate enough to fly with the two podium virgins after the race from Melbourne to Sydney .  Vitaly Petrov said that after his third place in Australia he was “unconscious on the podium” and didn’t really remember what happened up there so “I must have looked confused”.  Rob Marshall, Chief Designer at Red Bull accepting the winning constructor’s trophy for Red Bull was also on the flight and told me being on the podium was “Surreal”.  I’m sure both hope to be on the podium many more times in their careers.

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa told the gathered media he  likes this circuit and feels he can do well here.  After all he did qualify on pole twice here and remember last year after a very poor qualifying he worked his way through the field to finish in the points (7th).  But insiders at Ferrari tell me what may be the biggest boost for Massa is his spirited fight in Melbourne where he kept Button at bay for a number of laps primarily because he used his KERS system at the exact right time.  The team have been looking for a jump in Massa ’s race craft and they hope this was a sign of things to come.

OK now McLaren’s Jenson Button has revealed his frustration at getting beat so soundly by the Red Bulls in Australia that he started his own “smear campaign” by telling a group of journalists, “I know a few people that I have spoken to say the Red Bull wing flexes more than what they expect is correct, but I haven’t really spent much time looking at it.”  One UK journalist who was previously a big Button fan told me, “That’s it.  Jenson is officially a McLaren driver.  He used one of Ron Dennis’ favourite tactics by casting a shadow on a competitor’s legality quoting an other/unknown source and then quickly escaping yourself from the comment by saying but something like “But I haven’t really spent much time looking at it.”

Here’s another weird F1 statistic for you; in 2010 there were only 1/6 of the overtaking moves as there was in the 1990 F1 World Championship!  That’s why the race within a race this weekend is between the team’s aerodynamicists.  Sepang has long been considered one track where a good aerodynamic set-up will pay you dividends and allow you to eventually overtake.  Melbourne did not allow the teams to really show off their aero bits and so now you can expect some interesting set-ups on each car.  These are the bits they tested in private wind tunnels and on computers and now they will reveal to their competitors for the first time.  Many of the untested bits will be used by the Friday 3rd drivers for each team.  Many more tested and proven aero parts will be held out until Saturday so competitors cannot copy them overnight and use them in qualifying.

The Renault F1 team fresh off beating Ferrari and Mercedes in Melbourne are very excited by this race.    It is well documented that Robert Kubica was their lead driver last year.  After all he did score almost 84% of the teams points total.  But since Kubica’s accident the team have banded together and really focused on putting forward a great effort.  It was that great effort that meant they had a very positive and workmanlike pre-season test session, followed by good practice sessions in Australia and of course a very good race.  While most of the paddock was talking about who should replace the injured Kubica and then if the ultimate replacement, Nick Heidfeld, would be an “unfair” advantage given he was a Pirelli test driver.  Petrov and the rest of the team got on with the job at hand developing the Renault into a steady and apparently a fast race car.

According to one FIA official, the Sauber F1 team “showed its usually dignity” when it was determined that their cars had an encouraging finish in Melbourne ( 7th and 8th ) and then were ruled to have illegal rear wings.  Sauber chose not to appeal the ban despite their infringement by a mere fraction of an inch off the legal limit.   The penalty did cost the team dearly as points as so very valuable but team insiders tell me the team is still positively buoyed by their first race on-track results

Mercedes GP are looking to bounce back after what they are calling internally their “worst race weekend ever”.  But what’s gone wrong here?  One theory goes like this; over the winter Mercedes exercised its option with Aabar ( Abu Dhabi financial concern) and purchased the minority shares from the team’s leadership team (namely Ross Brawn) that they did not own.  Have these key team members lost their drive now that they no longer own any shares in the team?  One team insider told me, “Before the announcement was made we all noticed Ross going home earlier than he did in the prior 24-months.  We thought that was odd.  But it all made sense when they announced Mercedes had bought his shares.”

Finally, because it is the Malaysian Grand Prix a lot of the focus is on Lotus.  The marque owned by Proton who in turn are partly owned by the Malaysian government.  Sadly there are two “Lotus” entries in this year’s championship as the court case between the two protagonists has yet to be resolved.  Team Lotus run by Tony Fernandes (recent received and CBE from the Queen of England) doesn’t seem like they are hoping for much this year.  Just listen to what Fernandes told some Asia media earlier this week, “”My target for this year was always 10th, Of course, I put a target on the boys to go for eighth. Is there a chance of being eighth? Yes, I think so.  The team that we are trying to pick off is Force India . They are Jordan . They’ve been around for 20 years. You’ve got Williams, who I watched as a kid. Toro Rosso has the advantage of Red Bull around them. Sauber have been around for many years. They’ve got fantastic facilities built for them by BMW. We have to think of things in that kind of perspective.”  You may agree with most or all of that but then Fernandes said something that really irked the Asia media, “You cannot build a Formula One team in 18-months.”  When hearing this statement a leading Asian journalist told me, “On the one hand he is right.  But on the other hand last year he kept telling us, wait til next year.  So now it seems like he wants us to wait even longer!”
